![]() It’s a blast well worth playing and never feels tacked on to the fighting game core. What’s most impressive is the execution, which is gloriously cinematic and features some of the best facial animation I’ve ever seen in a video game. ![]() The narrative builds on the clever Superman-gone-bad concept of the previous title and has some fun with it. However, by the standard of fighting game stories, it isn’t bad. The story is a predictably goofy crossover tale that sees heroes and foes duke it out on the regular thanks to Brainiac’s skill with mind control. ![]() unleash some cutscene action set pieces so grandiose and deliriously entertaining that they are at least equal to any action scene in the current crop of DC movies. This particularly shows in the story mode, where Ed Boon and co. There’s genuine personality in how all of these DC legends were designed and executed. The graphics are gorgeous, but even better are the character designs and personalized nature of each fighter’s movement. It certainly helps that NetherRealm took full advantage of current gen console capabilities to create quite possibly the most beautiful fighting game I’ve ever seen. These combos are wildly amusing and gloriously over-the-top, better than last time and just as satisfyingly insane as a good Mortal Kombat fatality without all the gore. My personal favourite would be the Flash, who races his opponent back through time to bounce them off a dinosaur. Did you like when Superman punched his opponent into space last time? Well, this time Supergirl launches people past the sun and then laser blasts them (with her eyeholes) back to earth through an asteroid. The highlights for Kombat/ DC nerds like myself are the cutscene super combos that are somehow even more epic and insane than the last game. Where the first Injustice felt like a mishmash of Capcom fighters and new school Mortal Kombat, Injustice 2 has a fighting game identity of its own and it feels damn good. It doesn’t feel quite so clunky anymore and the fights move with a more frenetic pace without dipping into Marvel vs. NetherRealm have also adjusted some balance issues from last time. It can be a simple party game or the type of thing for which you spend countless sleepless nights training to withstand online tournaments. The simple commands hinge primarily on three attack buttons and the game feels like a satisfying pick-up-n-play button masher while also being filled with depth, epic combos, and strategy for the hardcore players out there. Sure, the title falls under DC’s peculiar obsession with grimness as gravity (seriously, can the Superfriends ever have fun again?), but that’s to be expected and you’ll likely have so much fun duking it out as these iconic characters for hours on end that it’ll be easy to ignore the extra unnecessary nastiness (Hey, this is DC by way of the Mortal Kombat kings after all).įirst off, the fighting-is it ever satisfying. This is one of the most beautiful fighting games on the market and thanks to some adjustments to the control and speed of combat, also one of the most satisfying. ![]() A few years have passed, and we now have a sequel that arguably tops its predecessor in any way. They created Injustice, a DC Universe fighting game that instantly found a place in this particular reviewer’s heart. A few years ago the folks over at NeatherRealm decided to dabble in a fighting game outside of the typical Mortal Kombat bloodletting. ![]()

![]() One aspect of Splatter School that isn’t annoying, however, is the music. The ghost boss I mentioned earlier highlights this the most, in which there’s the issue of him being too easy, dissipating any tension and simply making the situation more annoying than anything. I can see how this can be argued as a good thing since it can be used to build tension and always keep you afraid, but that requires a refined difficulty curve to keep you on your toes, which is something Splatter School simply doesn’t have. It was so easy, I was worried that I was missing something and wasn’t actually doing any damage to him, which brings me to an issue Splatter School has: the bosses have no life bars. The fights themselves may be pretty simple once you get the attack pattern down, but they’re visually interesting most of the time however, the gym ghost boss was a noticeable letdown, with a boring design and painful simplicity. After every couple of stages, you’ll run into a boss of some horrific theme, from a mere ghost to a mass of guts, all the way up to a flayed human head with all the tendons and sinew on display. As you play the game and become familiar with the enemies, you get into a bit of a rhythm as you quickly respond to threats and dance your way through the school in its perverse deformation. A disembodied hand may break through some glass to strangle you, but you’re never bitter about it, especially since it even gives you the opportunity to experiment with some deaths here and there just to see what the game has to offer. Additionally, if you do die, you only have to restart from the corridor you died in. As Jessica takes more damage, her clothing is removed layers at a time, meaning the death animations are only ever with a bare Jessica.ĭeath isn’t much of an annoyance in the game, since stages are quite short, with only a couple corridors before a boss fight. Monsters and traps pop out of the environment pretty quickly, but with just enough delay to respond to them if you know what to do and have enough life to not be too deterred from pressing on. ![]() ![]() You can only move right as you make your way to the exit down the corridor, crafted of flesh, bone and sinew, but braving through the halls rewards quick reactions. Splatter School actually has a pretty fun game hidden behind the simplistic design. The setting and brutality is what keeps you playing, and it’s quite the enticing experience, with solid pixel animations and a myriad of ways to die. I find it’s much better to start immediately, leaving you fearful and alone in a gory world, as the plot isn’t really important here you have an easily identifiable horror setting with a 2D plane to progress in, and that’s really all I need. The controls are pretty easy to pick up too, using the arrow keys to move, Z to jump, X to attack, S to pause and A to use any item you pick up. Splatter School pretty much drops you in with nothing unless you linger on the title screen long enough for the attract video to start. Of course, you don’t need or get this much of an introduction going into the game. Armed with merely an old box cutter, Jessica must fight her way out or die where she stands. Jessica, the game’s heroine, took a nap during class only to awake to the sounds of a fire alarm and the sight of her classmates slaughtered by various horrific monsters. The premise is simple: you’re a girl trying to escape a demonic school without dying in various grotesque ways. ![]() ![]() Welcome to Splatter School, a 2012 2D, side-scrolling, guro action game by Ankoku Marimokan that delivers a disgusting descent into horror and erotic death. ![]() ![]() ![]() At 6:47, another note: “The investigation into the connection issues continues.”Īt approximately 8:49 AM on October 11, Blizzard began issuing “we’re working on a solution” announcements with the dreaded “more updates in an hour.” At 10:14 AM, they issued another “we are still investigating the connection issues” with another “ will have more information in the next hour.” Like waiting on a tarmac delay in an airplane, hearing the pilot suggest “just another 15 minutes folks. And when a long take could impart some degree of emotion on a frame, Mathieson and Schumacher employ cuts instead. There are so many long takes where there should not be long takes, presumably to hide how pitifully tiny the sets are. ![]() But the use of different shots is mystifying. The cinematography on “Phantom” is abysmal. Virtually every set is overlit and miniscule, a bad enough crime in and of itself. John Mathieson, director of photography for the film, was nominated for an Oscar for his work, which is completely baffling. Even with the miserable performances from the two leads, this film’s biggest failings come from the technical aspects. Schumacher, in all his incompetence, cannot manage to consistently create compelling frames. Looking beyond the disappointing Butler and Rossum, the rest of the film just does not work. Microsoft’s Outllok has long eclipsed IBM Lotus Notes as the standard office collaboration tool, even if the latter offered a lot more functionality, such as the ability to run applications that could be easily built by even those without any development experience. In contrast, Lotus Notes had to always be purchased separately and installed in addition to whatever software suite you had on your PC.īetween two similar products, the one with a better built-in distribution channel wins every time. Of course, every Mac user had AppleWorks and then iWork, as well as Apple Mail to use as the default office suite and email client. Those users whose PCs didn’t have a trial or a full version of MSOffice on it, typically installed the suite for the sheer convenience and value of it. Almost every PC sold in the last 20 years had Outlook pre-installed as part of Microsoft Office. Sometimes in business, a solid distribution channel is everything. This is one of the reasons why twenty-some-odd years later, Notes - and its server counterpart dubbed ‘Domino’ - still boasts a user base of millions around the world. However, over the years as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript developed, so did the ability to integrate them into Notes applications for the web. When web sites came into fashion, Notes applications could be easily web-enabled, although losing much of the UI and custom formatting available through the Notes client. In addition to that, Lotus Notes applications/databases are encrypted and can only be used by those authorized by their Notes ID and the certificate keys stored in the Domino Directory.Īll things considered, Lotus Notes was indeed a pioneer in the burgeoning online world. Notes ‘replication’ allowed for keeping multiple ‘replicas’ of databases up-to-date on various servers and local desktops - no other database application at the time had anything close to that. ![]() ![]() Also, for the first time, the creation of rich text databases with variable length data records became available to developers. Want to see a poisonous frog face off against a chandelier? Of course you do, and Pokkén Tournament's real achievement is not only making sense of it all but making it an upbeat, energetic treat too. There's something gloriously absurd about Pokémon, a facet which Pokkén Tournament rises to with real flair. Honestly, though, I just like pounding the bejesus out of other Pokemon with an owl, because owls are kind of cool, right? A quick-winged owl with a quill of arrows to hand, Decidueye is a furious blast to play, mixing ranged attacks with close-quarters flurries and beautifully straddling the two different phases that define Pokken Tournament's battles. It's Decidueye I've been mostly drawn to (though trident-crown sporting mega penguin Empoleon is running it close), perhaps because he speaks to what I really enjoy about Pokkén. Four of them have been available for a while in the arcades, while another - generation seven's grass-type Decidueye - is entirely new. The fundamentals haven't been touched - and, for what it's worth, I find myself in agreement with Chris Schilling's positive take on it for us when he reviewed it last year - but it's been built out to include five new characters. ![]() Who, exactly, is Pokken Tournament for then? Maybe it's for me - a casual in regards to both camps, and someone who had an awful lot of fun with Pokken Tournament when it first came to Wii U last March.Īnd I've been having an awful amount of fun with Pokkén Tournament DX, which folds a fair amount of improvements and extras into that 2016 game and comes with the added boon of being truly portable. This week marks the release of the Switch's first Pokémon game - albeit a spin-off, of course - and I doubt it'll register much, with fighting fans finding Pokkén's take on Tekken's crunchy combat not to their taste and Pokemon fans finding it lacks the breadth and sheer number of characters that they thirst for. Īll this at a time when Pokémon's star has never been higher. I work in an office full of Pokémon fanatics, and not one of them has played or ever expressed an interesting in playing Pokkén. It's struggled to find traction closer to home, too. I've spent the past couple of days touring the various arcades of Tokyo - not a bad way to spend a September weekend - and every cabinet I've come across has sat unplayed. I love that story, not because swearing is big, clever and funny (though it definitely is ) but because it brilliantly illustrates the weird contradiction that is Pokkén Tournament, a curious game that's struggled to find its niche since its release a couple of years back - failing to ignite the passions of the fighting game community and failing to speak to the broader Pokémon audience. Parents cupped their children's ears, quickly ushering them out of the auditorium in a scene of mild chaos. There, in the relatively family-friendly environment of a Pokémon Tournament, the air was turned briefly blue as the serious business of having Pokémon knock the crap out of each other in Bandai Namco's brawler was conducted on-stage. One of my favourite stories to arise from Pokkén Tournament's short life - a second-hand tale, I'm afraid, though I've no doubt it's true - comes from one of its early competitive showings. ![]() |
